Canada’s national capital Ottawa has had 25 shootings since Nov 2011
we learn this as a side note in a police PR article on ‘gun seizures’
-
More than half of the firearms police seized this year didn’t come from gun-toting gangsters, but that’s who police are targeting. So far this year, 21 firearms have been seized by the Ottawa police guns and gangs unit and Direct Action Response Team. Eleven confiscated firearms stemmed from public safety warrants – people with legally registered guns who, for several reasons, should no longer have them. Past cases have ranged from a domestic violence situation to a suicidal teen with access to his father’s guns. Police say these types of cases make up a large amount of seizures. While anyone in possession of a gun who shouldn’t be is a concern, police say their top priority is getting guns out of the hands of gangsters.”Our bread and butter is the crime guns. We’re seeing more of the criminal element carrying firearms,” said Staff Sgt. Mark Patterson, of the guns and gangs unit. “For us, because there’s more guns on the street, it’s a concern for our frontline (officers) and the public.”
Brazen shootings — 25 since November — prompted an enforcement campaign that culminated in more than 60 arrests by March, but despite the massive sweep, police continue to work to curtail shootings and other violence. In the latest shooting on Friday in Westboro, cops seized a semi-automatic handgun.
