Ottawa to lower residential speed limit & a bit about the whiners that made it happen

There are dumb crooks and then there are dumb whiners.

A fuming east-end cyclist told Ottawa police too many drivers are speeding along Innes Rd., going 80 km/h in a 60 km/h zone. Last month, cops nailed him driving his car at 100 km/h in the same stretch.

“He’s guilty as anybody else is — even worse — 40 km over the speed limit. Another 10 km, I’ll take your car from you,” said Sgt. Mark Gatien of east division traffic section.

“So you’d think that somebody that’s concerned about the speed limit on there because ‘when I’m driving my bicycle, it’s very scary that the cars are passing by me at 20 km over the speed limit,’ ”

In the hope of slowing down motorists, Kitchissippi Coun. Katherine Hobbs is pushing for a lower residential limit — to 40 km/h from 50 km/h — taking a page from the City of Gatineau, where a new bylaw kicks in next month
